Artwork for the album, “Midlife Crisis”
Nick Arneson is a Portland based artist who released this new album in 2018. The brief was simple and open for artistic interpretation; create an image of a man, sitting in front of a wave, about to crash him into oblivion
PROCESS & INSPIRATION
I was inspired by a scene from Christopher Nolan’s film, Interstellar. When I watched the film, I was moved by a wave scene that somehow captured a balance of natural beauty and impending doom.
ROUGH SKETCHES
In the end we decided to go with the character holding a phone as that was more directly related to Nick’s experience at this time in his life.
For the “man” on the cover, I thought an amorphous silhouette would be best to represent the character and in a way, could allow more people to project themselves on to the imagery.
Below is an earlier rough of the cover, where I wanted the character daydreaming listening to music.
