Fall/Winter 2021
GODSPEED
ROSE 12
In the offseason, Derrick got a tattoo across his neck that reads GODSPEED.
This word is usually said at the beginning of a journey to wish someone good fortune. Thinking about where Derrick came from and everything he’s been through along his journey, I found it so aspirational that someone who could’ve had so many possible endings, is still looking forward at new beginnings.
This was the story I felt we needed to tell. One that goes beyond Rose’s game, and speaks more to his mindset and perseverance.
CONCEPT BOARD
LIGHT - ENGINEERED - SUPPORTIVE - REDUCTIVE - HUMAN
I distilled my visual research into these 5 words that would guide my exploration
MATERIAL COMPOSITIONS
Once I created the story and design language, I began to put together some material compositions that represented my research and insights.
EXPLORE
I decided to focus on a visual of radiating lines that spoke to Derrick’s tattoo artwork, but would also have functionality and create lockdown and stability.
PIVOTING
A change in the brief to reduce retail price caused me to pivot from a fully engineered upper and new TPU plate to instead look to figure out a functional lockdown system while keeping the overall feeling and visual of the existing design.
MAKING
I made some mockups of the pattern and lacing/support structures to quickly figure out potential issues.
ELEGANT SYMMETRY
While attending the “PHEROMONE” exhibit at OMSI, I was inspired by the elegant symmetries found in nature and incorporated this into the top down view of my design.
SINGULAR VISUAL
In order to create a singular visual, I wanted to take the pattern of radiating lines and turn them into support structures as well as using them to cut into the silhouette and create a more dynamic collar.
By dispersing pressure across a skeletal-like TPU structure instead of one solid shank plate, I sought to lighten up the shoe, and provide a more flexible support system.
SIMPLIFYING AND REFINING
PROCESS
PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE
Lined up the past, present, and future chapters of the ROSE franchise as a gut check, to make sure the product was moving forward while keeping some familiar DNA.
PUSHING THE IDEA
While the team felt the design was in a good place, we wanted to push the idea further so I went back to the original visual inspiration. My goal was to unify the composition of the shoe into a single thought.
FINAL DIRECTION CR1
For the final direction at CR1, I went back to the parameters I set for myself to be REDUCTIVE.
In order to stay true to this, I removed the rubber wraps from the outsole and instead created sharp champfers to cut wedges off the midsole. This was meant to reduce weight and also create articulation points which could help the athlete move better.
